The History of the Nutrimin

The word “Nutrimin” was coined in 1974 by Mr. David Alan Tait.  He was suffering tremendous abdominal distress (caused by both improper eating and Celiac Disease).  His friend, a health food store owner, kept suggesting vitamin supplements.

vitamin (or sometimes vitamine, from “vital amine” [Funk]): an organic substance essential in small quantities to the normal health of an animal (including humans. Vitamins must typically be supplied to the animal through diet.

The term vitamin was derived from “vitamine,” a combination word made up by Polish scientist Casimir Funk from vital and amine, meaning amine of life, because it was suggested in 1912 that the organic micronutrient food factors that prevent beriberi and perhaps other similar dietary-deficiency diseases might be chemical amines. This proved incorrect for the micronutrient class, and the word was shortened to vitamin.

Poor health, caused Mr. Tait to look beyond vitamins and known amines like amino acids, to the realm of the Nutrient!

A nutrient is a chemical that an organism needs to live and grow or a substance used in an organism’s metabolism which must be taken in from its environment. Nutrients are the substances that enrich the body. They are used to build and repair tissues, regulate body processes and converted to and used as energy. Methods for nutrient intake vary, with animals and protists consuming foods that are digested by an internal digestive system, but most plants ingest nutrients directly from the soil through their roots or from the atmosphere.

Organic nutrients include carbohydrates, fats, proteins (or their building blocks, amino acids), and vitamins. Inorganic chemical compounds such as dietary minerals, water, and oxygen may also be considered nutrients.

Nutrimin Examples

Yet, Mr. Tait noticed in himself there were other Nutrients that were not so easy to classify.  So he coined the term “Nutrimin” for anything that is required for an optimal healthy life.  For example…

Hibernation| Nutrimin-H – The process of deep restful sleep.  Restful Hibernation is a Nutrimin.  Humans cannot live an optimum life without quality sleep.

Light | Nutrimin-L – We know about Vitamin D being a nutrient, but we just begin to understand about photo Nutrimins (nutrients)!  We truly are creatures of light and sunlight is one of the most powerful Nutrimin sources we have.

Inhale| Nutrimin-I – O2 is a well known Nutrient.  Yet, we take Air (not just O2) for grant.  People who inhale deep breaths of air are receiving a Nutrimin much more powerful than Oxygen alone.  People on 100% oxygen still die of heart attacks, but it is known today that in some cases, inhaling a deep breath of regular air can stop a heart attack – Inhaling is obviously a Nutrimin!

Personal | Nutrimin-P – Personal Relationships.  In years past we heard about stress and how it destroyed things like Vitamin C.  Today we know that our Personal contacts can create things like serotonin.  About 20% of serotonin is synthesized in serotonergic neurons in the CNS where it has various functions. These include the regulation of mood, appetite, sleep, as well as muscle contraction.  Serotonin also has some cognitive functions, including in memory and learning.  There are many researchers who believe that an imbalance in serotonin levels may influence mood in a way that leads to depression. Our Personal Life is a powerful Nutrimin.

Exercise | Nutrimin-E1 – We all know we need it.  Kinetic movements do more than just work our bones and muscles!  Exercise with Alanine converts to Carnosine – a hot topic on Vegan diet boards today along with B-12 and DHA which are not found in Vegan diets.  Exercise then, becomes a Nutrimin.  Actually Exercise has many benefits to the Optimal Health perspective.

Employ | Nutrimin-E2 – Employment is another powerful Nutrimin.  Our jobs, professions or businesses all come with stress – yet, in some of the most stressful jobs, some people thrive!  They love their Employment!  The truth is that this Nutrimin is vital in our life.  If you don’t like your job – Quit!  It is said a person who loves his job never works a day in their life.  If we were not paid, would we still do our job?  Are you working at a job you hate?  Do you dream of becoming an Entrepreneur?  Or a professional mountain climber?  Go for it!  Love what you are doing because what you Employ yourself with – is a powerful Nutrimin.

“Remember,” Mr. Tait says, “A Nutrimin is anything that you require for an optimum health!”

Of course Nutrimins would includes all nutrients that our limited science has so far identified…  We can be sure that each year, new Nutrimins are being identified.

Therefore, Nutrimin is the term you want to use when you are describing what people need for an optimum healthy life.
